December
Although December is the 12th month of the Julian and Gregorian calendars, its name means “tenth month” as it was literally the tenth month of the year of the ancient Roman calendar which began in March. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Wheel of the Year turns once more towards the Winter Solstice and the Yule Sabbat.
Both are associated with a time for reflection, renewal, manifestation and celebration; a time to celebrate the rebirth of the sun and return of the light following the longest night of the year. Many will perform rituals and ceremonies to honour the Sun’s return; these may be used to reflect on the past year and to set intentions for the coming year. A Yule log will traditionally be lit. The rebirth of the God will be at the centre of the celebrations for Pagans. It is at this time that traditionally it was time again for the twice-yearly battle between the Holly King (King of Winter) and the Oak King (King of Summer). This time the Holly King dies and the Oak King once again rules.
In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the Summer Solstice that is celebrated.
