October
October is the 10th month of the Julian and Gregorian calendars with a length of 31 days. The name October means 8th month in Latin as it was the 8th month of the year according to the old Roman Calendar which began in March.
In the Northern Hemisphere, October is one of the most active months for the magickal community; it is a time of magic, transformation and for honouring the cycle of life and death, and very importantly our ancestors. The most important day being 31st October, known in the Pagan and Witch worlds as Samhain (pronounced Sowain). Coming from Celtic tradition, Samhain is considered as the Witch’s New Year and arguably the most important and highest celebration of the Sabbats. It is at this time, that the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is at its thinnest, making communication between the two, the strongest. Part of the Samhain celebrations also include the third of the three Harvest Festivals and the releasing of anything that no longer needed.
Today, whilst Samhain continues to be deeply honoured and celebrated, the more commercial world we now live in sees and celebrates it as Halloween, or All Hallows and why it is now associated with ghosts, skeletons, zombies etc.
Other sayings and beliefs for October include:
Deer in their “grey” coats indicate a hard winter ahead.
