June
June is the sixth month in the modern Gregorian and Julian calendars and considered as being the first month of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. June is thought to have been named after the Roman Goddess Juno who is the Goddess of Marriage but may also come from the Roman word “juniors” which means “young ones. The Anglo-Saxon name for June was “Sera monath” which means “dry month”.
In the Northern Hemisphere, June is considered as being a time of abundance, vitality and celebration with the coming of the summer months. It is during this month that the Summer Solstice/Midsummer’s Day/Litha is celebrated on 21st – the longest day of the year. During this celebration month, rituals and ceremonies to honour the sun, fertility and the Earth’s abundance may take place.
In days gone by, June was considered as being a lucky month to get married in because of it being presided over by Juno the Roman Goddess of Marriage. This is possibly where the saying “Married in the month of June, Life will be one long honeymoon” came from??!! There is an Icelandic custom which suggests that you won’t age during this year if you bathe in the morning dew on 24th June!
Other sayings and beliefs include:
A calm June puts the farmer in tune, Damp and warm does no harm
